Hard Topwater Lures

Explosive surface strikes that make your heart race. Hard topwater lures create commotion, flash, and noise that draws fish from deep water to attack on top. From walking baits to poppers to prop baits, nothing beats the violence of a topwater strike.

Why Topwater Works

Bass feed on the surface when they're aggressive and actively hunting. Topwater lures trigger predatory instincts — fish see the commotion, hear the noise, and attack because the bait looks like it's escaping. The visual strike is what makes topwater fishing addictive.

Types of Hard Topwater Lures

Walking Baits: Side-to-side walking action that mimics injured baitfish. Work them with rhythmic twitches to create a zigzag pattern on the surface. Deadly in calm water and around cover.

Poppers: Cupped faces that create popping sounds and splash. Pop, pause, pop — the cadence triggers strikes. Great for calling fish up from deep water and working around structure.

Prop Baits: Spinning props that create flash, noise, and surface disturbance. Work them fast or slow — the props do the work. Effective in low light and stained water.

Buzzbaits (Hard Body): Hard-bodied versions of classic buzzbaits. Churn the surface with blade rotation and create wakes that trigger explosive strikes.

When to Fish Topwater

Early morning and late evening when bass are feeding on the surface. Overcast days and low-light conditions. Pre-spawn and post-spawn when bass are shallow and aggressive. Anytime you see fish busting bait on top.

How to Fish Hard Topwater

Cast past your target and work the bait back with twitches, pops, or steady retrieves depending on lure type. Vary cadence to trigger strikes — sometimes fast and erratic, sometimes slow with long pauses. When a fish blows up on the bait, resist setting the hook until you feel weight. Most missed strikes come from setting too early.
