Fishing Line
The connection between you and the fish. Monofilament for stretch and forgiveness, fluorocarbon for invisibility and sensitivity, braid for strength and no stretch. The right line makes hooksets solid, fights manageable, and lost fish rare.
Why Line Matters
Cheap line breaks on hooksets, frays on rocks, and spooks fish in clear water. Quality line casts smooth, knots strong, and holds up to hard fishing. The difference between landing fish and losing them often comes down to line quality.
Line Types and When to Use Them
Monofilament: Stretch absorbs shock and keeps treble hooks pinned. Floats for topwater. Affordable and forgiving for beginners. Best for crankbaits, topwater, and techniques where stretch helps.
Fluorocarbon: Nearly invisible underwater. Sinks fast and has low stretch for solid hooksets. Abrasion-resistant for fishing rocks and wood. Best for clear water, jigs, Texas rigs, and finesse presentations.
Braid: No stretch for maximum sensitivity and solid hooksets. Thin diameter cuts through grass and vegetation. Strong for its diameter — use lighter pound test with more strength. Best for flipping heavy cover, topwater, and power fishing.
Choosing the Right Pound Test
Light line (6-10 lb): Finesse presentations, clear water, spinning reels. Better casting distance with light lures.
Medium line (12-17 lb): All-around fishing, most techniques, versatile for bass and other species.
Heavy line (20+ lb): Flipping heavy cover, pulling fish out of vegetation, power fishing with braid.
Line Maintenance
Check line for nicks and abrasion after every trip. Retie after catching fish or hitting rocks. Replace line at least once a season or more if you fish hard. Fresh line casts better and breaks less.
